The TfP Programme at ACCORD hosted the 7th APSTA AGM in Durban

The Training for Peace (TfP) Programme at ACCORD, in its capacity as holder of the Presidency of the African Peace Support Trainers’ Association (APSTA) for 2009, hosted the 7th APSTA Annual General Meeting (AGM) from 18 – 19 February 2010 in Durban, South Africa.

APSTA provides a forum for collaboration between Africa’s peacekeeping training institutions as well as coordinated engagement with the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RECs), particularly in relation to the operationalisation of the African Standby Force (ASF). The association has made significant contributions in this area and has been the main source of input from African civil society.

The AGM deliberated on a number of proposals for the revitalisation of APSTA. More specifically, it discussed, inter alia, a constitution for the association, roles, functions and obligations of member institutions, the Secretariat and the Presidency. The focus was to improve upon the structures and processes for the efficient governance, oversight and coordination of the association.

The AGM also formally welcomed the African Civilian Capacity Response for Peace Support Operations (AFDEM), the Cairo Centre for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA) and the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre (NAPKC) as new members at the association. It also confirmed the nomination of the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) as the new of the Presidency for 2010.
