Training for Peace in Africa - Newsletter No 1 (2010)

Training for Peace in Africa (TfP) is an international capacity building programme aiming at improved and self-sustaining African civilian and police capacity for peace support operations, and with a view to strengthening the African security architecture.

The programme’s focus is on training, policy advice and research, with a major part of activities being carried out by African partners.

The TfP Programme at ACCORD hosted the 7th APSTA AGM in Durban

The Training for Peace (TfP) Programme at ACCORD, in its capacity as holder of the Presidency of the African Peace Support Trainers’ Association (APSTA) for 2009, hosted the 7th APSTA Annual General Meeting (AGM) from 18 – 19 February 2010 in Durban, South Africa.

Norwegian support to UNMIS election security training for SSPS police

At the request of DPKO and UNMIS, Norway supported and funded UNMIS-led “training of trainers” of 120 police officers from the South Sudanese Police Service (SSPS), on election security issues, in Nairobi in February 2010.

The future role of the UN peacebuilding architecture

Researchers from the Training for Peace in Africa Programme at KAIPTC, NUPI and ACCORD (Kwesi Aning, Ernest Lartey, Cedric de Coning) are contributing to a project that examines the future role of the UN peacebuilding architecture from various perspectives. The project emphasizes the need for more ambitious targets over the next five years.

AFDEM accepted as an APSTA Member

At the 7th APSTA Annual General Meeting which was held in Durban from 18-19 February 2010 African Civilian Standby Roster for Humanitarian and Peace Building Missions (AFDEM) was accepted as a member of the African Peace Support Trainers Association.

EMP - Ecole De Maintien De La Paix (Mali) and AFDEM Partnership

On the 27th of January 2010, AFDEM signed a Memorandum Of Understanding with Mali Peace Keeping School (EMP).

Conflict Management for Peacekeepers Train-the-Trainer Course

The Training for Peace (TfP) Programme at ACCORD will be conducting a Conflict Management for Peacekeepers Train-the-Trainer course from 15-19 March 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Integrated Approach in UN and AU Peace Operations

NUPI and ACCORD researcher Cedric de Conning has written a report entitled "Implications of a Comprehensive or Integrated Approach for Training in United Nations and African Union Peace Operations".

CIS/IT Training and Roster Review Workshop, Seychelles January 2010

As with the arrangement between AFDEM and EASBRICOM, AFDEM continues to play an advisory role in the development of the civilian standby roster for EASBRIG. On 25-30 January 2010 AFDEM organised a CIS/IT Training and Roster Review Workshop in the Seychelles.

Support is also provided to Eastern Africa Standby Brigade Coordination Mechanism (EASBRICOM) and African Civilian Standby Roster for Humanitarian and Peace Building Missions (AFDEM), and the Norwegian National Police Directorate supports the training activities.
