Training for Peace in Africa - Newsletter No 2 (2009)

Training for Peace in Africa (TfP) is an international capacity building programme aiming at improved and self-sustaining African civilian and police capacity for peace support operations, and with a view to strengthening the African security architecture.

The programme’s focus is on training, policy advice and research, with a major part of activities being carried out by African partners.

Protection of Civilians

Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre gave a speech on protection of civilians at the Annual Training for Peace Seminar in Oslo 6 October 2009.

UN Civil Affairs Handbook

The TfP programme at ACCORD is assisting the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) with the development of a Civil Affairs Handbook.

TfP Supports Exercise Golfino

Over the period 1 to 22 September 2009 South Africa hosted the Southern African Development Community (SADC) first-ever African Union Standby Force exercise. The exercise involved ISS, ACCORD and AFDEM.

Award to Police Training for UNAMID

The UN training programme for individual police to Darfur, known as the Pilot Police Pre-Deployment Training Initiative for Darfur (3PDTID), has received an award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) at their annual conference in Denver, Colorado.

AFDEM in cooperation with CCCPA

AFDEM Signs an MoU with the Cairo Regional Center for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA).

Special Issue of Conflict Trends

ACCORD has recently published a special TfP issue of Conflict Trends 2009/3 which covers developments in African peacekeeping and peace-building, and the synergies and overlapping concerns that exist between them.

Bottlenecks to Deployment?

Newly published report from NUPI that addresses the role of training programmes with respect to the deployment of personnel in peace operations. How effective is the deployment of trained personnel, and what are the main obstacles to this deployment?

AFDEM Advises EASBRIG

As AFDEM’s role is increasing in rostering issues on the African continent, the organisation was invited to attend a CIS Rostering workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, organized by EASBRICOM the coordinating body for the East African Brigade.

UN/AU Police Pre-deployment Courses

A Nordic team of Police trainers, together with Eastern Africa trainers, will and the end of 2009 have facilitated a total of five UN / AU Pre-deployment courses at Humanitarian Peace Support School in Nairobi for police officers going to AMISOM, UNAMID and the Eastern Africa Standby Force Roster.

Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course

ACCORD conducted Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course for MINURCAT and a second course for UNAMID.
