ISS Strengthens the Focus on the Eastern Africa Region

The division of work between the Training for Peace offices of ISS in Pretoria and Nairobi has allowed for more dedicated support to the Eastern Africa region, particularly to East African Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (EAPCCO).

ISS in Nairobi seeks to deepen support for the development of the Eastern African Standby Force, by working towards EASBRICOM (the newly established Eastern African Standby Brigade Coordination Mechanism), the Kenya International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) and EAPCCO. This important work is carried out together with the Norwegian Police Adviser to EASBRICOM. The ISS has a MoU with EASBRICOM.

Closer collaboration between the structures in Eastern Africa is expected to improve with increasing collaborative work around EASBRICOM’s policy development efforts especially with regards to the establishment of an Eastern Africa Peace and Security Mechanism (EAPSM), devolving to an Eastern Africa Peace and Security Secretariat and a multidimensional Eastern Africa Standby Force and other political organs and operational structures. It is expected that these developments involving technical support from the ISS may eventually result in closer coordination of the training conducted at the IPSTC and that provided within the framework of EAPCCO.
